Get your free estimateYork Capacitor Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
York capacitor replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $150 – $320 installed, parts and labor included, and we carry York-compatible capacitors on our trucks so most jobs are done same-day. A capacitor is the small cylinder inside your outdoor condenser or air handler that stores and releases the electrical jolt needed to start the compressor and fan motor. When it fails, your York system won’t cool, or the outdoor unit hums without the fan spinning, or the compressor struggles to start and trips the breaker. In Fort Lauderdale’s heat and salt air, we replace more York capacitors between June and October than any other single part. If your York unit is acting up, this is usually where the story starts.
Which York Models This Applies To
York condenser and heat pump units use either a dual-run capacitor (one cylinder, two ratings: one side for the compressor, one for the fan) or separate run capacitors depending on the series. Residential York lines we see most in Fort Lauderdale include the Affinity, LX, and Latitude series, along with older Stellar and Guardian units still on their original capacitors. York labels the capacitor spec directly on the part: you’ll see a microfarad (µF) rating like 35/5, 40/5, 45/5, or 50/5, plus a voltage rating of 370V or 440V. The label is on the capacitor itself, usually near the top of the outdoor unit behind the access panel. Matching the exact microfarad rating matters more than the brand; using a 45/5 in place of a 35/5 will over-drive the compressor and shorten its life. We install OEM York capacitors or premium aftermarket equivalents (AmRad, Titan HD) rated for 440V, which handle Fort Lauderdale’s voltage fluctuations better than bare-minimum 370V parts. Cold Harbour Heating and Air Fort Lauderdale is an independent service provider and not affiliated with York or Johnson Controls, but our technicians are trained on York systems and stock the common capacitor ratings on the truck.

Signs Your York Capacitor Is Failing
- Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. The capacitor has lost enough capacitance to start the fan motor, but the unit still draws power. You’ll hear the hum, maybe a clicking sound, and the top of the unit gets warm. If you leave it this way, the compressor can overheat and fail.
- AC blows warm air and the compressor short-cycles. The compressor tries to start, can’t get over the starting torque, and shuts off on its internal overload. It might try again every few minutes. In Fort Lauderdale humidity, short-cycling also leaves the coil wet, which grows mold faster.
- AC works sometimes, then quits. A capacitor on its way out can read fine when the unit is cool and fail once it heats up. This is the “it worked yesterday” call we get constantly. The capacitor is degrading, not dead yet.
- The top of the capacitor is bulging or leaking oil. When a capacitor overheats, the internal dielectric fluid expands and the metal can swells. You might see a domed top, or a small oily drip down the side. That’s a dead part, not a negotiable one.
- You start the AC manually with a stick to push the fan blade. If spinning the fan by hand gets it going (don’t do this with the power on), it’s the classic failed start capacitor. The motor can run once spinning, but it can’t start on its own. This is also a common way people get hurt, which we’ll cover below.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Lauderdale, York capacitor replacement runs $150 to $320 for a single capacitor installed, with most jobs landing between $180 and $260. The range is driven by a few things: whether the unit needs one capacitor or two (some older York condensers use separate run and start capacitors), whether it’s a standard 370V part or an upgraded 440V heavy-duty unit, and whether the technician also finds a hard start kit worth adding while the panel is open. Our written price is handed to you before any work starts, and it does not change at the door. That price covers the part, the labor, the diagnosis, and a written 365-day guarantee: if that new capacitor fails inside a year, we come back and replace it at no charge. This is part of the Kingswell Way, and it’s never verbal-only. Some companies charge a diagnostic fee separate from the repair; our estimate includes the full job so there’s no surprise line item.

Capacitors store enough electrical charge to seriously injure you even after the power is off. That’s the plain truth. A capacitor that’s failed can still hold a charge strong enough to stop your heart, and discharging one properly requires a resistor and a working knowledge of how not to become the path to ground. The electrical hazard is real, not theoretical, and the 240V feeding the condenser is live unless you pull the correct disconnect. What you can safely check: is the breaker tripped, is the thermostat calling for cooling, is the outdoor unit free of leaves and debris. If the unit hums but won’t start, or the fan won’t spin, that’s our call to make. Victor Mancini will check capacitance with a meter, photograph the old part, and show you exactly what he’s replacing before he touches it. Call (754) 354-7289 and tell us what the unit is doing. Most York capacitor replacements in Fort Lauderdale are done within two hours of the call.
York Capacitor Replacement: Key Takeaways
- Most York capacitor replacements in Fort Lauderdale cost $150 – $320 installed, with a written price before work begins.
- We stock common York ratings (35/5, 40/5, 45/5, 50/5) at 370V and 440V on the truck, so most jobs are same-day.
- Fort Lauderdale’s heat and salt air shorten capacitor life: a capacitor that’s 7 – 10 years old is on borrowed time.
- Every capacitor replacement includes our written 365-Day Done Right Promise: fail inside a year and we return free.
- Do not open the condenser panel or touch a suspected failed capacitor. The stored charge is dangerous even with the breaker off.
FAQs
Most York capacitors last 7 to 12 years in Fort Lauderdale conditions, but salt air, voltage spikes, and extreme heat can shorten that to 5 years or less. Capacitors degrade gradually, so a unit that runs fine one summer can fail the next. If your York system is over 8 years old and the capacitor has never been replaced, it’s not a question of if, it’s when. Call (754) 354-7289 to have us test the capacitor’s microfarad reading before it fails at the worst possible time.
No. A capacitor is a sealed component; once the dielectric fluid inside breaks down or the can bulges, the part is done. There is no rebuild, refill, or repair path. Replacement is the only option, and it’s usually one of the least expensive AC repairs in Fort Lauderdale.
Most capacitor replacements take 30 to 60 minutes from panel-off to panel-on, including testing the new part under load. If we also recommend a hard start kit or a second capacitor, that adds about 20 minutes. We’ll give you a firm arrival window when you call (754) 354-7289, and the live person who answers can book the visit.
Yes. Our Fort Lauderdale trucks carry the most common York capacitor ratings: 35/5, 40/5, 45/5, 50/5 at 370V and 440V, plus hard start kits for older York condensing units. If your unit takes an uncommon spec we don’t have on board, our parts network can usually have it same-day. We also carry replacement parts for Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems, so one call covers almost any brand in the driveway.
Yes. A capacitor running below its rated microfarad value makes the compressor and fan motor draw more current to start and run. That inefficiency shows up as higher electric bills and more heat stress on the windings. Replacing a failing capacitor is one of the cheapest efficiency improvements you can make on an older York system.
